Cheerio! The “Downton Abbey” movie is here, and we’ve broken out our fanciest hats and finest teacups to celebrate at Breakfast All Day. Alonso and I review the big-screen version of the beloved TV series — he’s a huge fan, I’d never seen a single episode — as well as Brad Pitt’s sad-people-in-space movie, “Ad Astra.” We also discuss a darkly funny indie crime thriller, “Villains.” Over at our Patreon, we do our latest Off the Menu review of the 1975 cult classic “Smile” and talk about several new trailers including “Knives Out,” which looks fantastic. And we delve into a topic we never thought we’d want to know anything about (and perhaps still don’t): Thomas Middleditch’s swinger lifestyle. We apologize in advance for the imperfect audio — we’re still learning after all this time. But we are so grateful to you guys for sticking with us! Hope you enjoy.

  1. You know it’s going to be a great episode when Alonso says to get a plate of scones and talk about Downton Abbey. I love his enthusiasm.

  2. Just saw Ad Astra today. So disappointed, such a defeated forlorn dismal tone throughout. I want to be thrilled and uplifted by the movies, not exposed to the writer’s personal baggage with his dad! God, are you kidding me! Who greenlit this shit! I purposely avoided learning anything about Ad Astra and getting to see it early, but I wish I had held off and listened to Christy and Alonso dissect it so I’d have known to save my money, and more importantly my time and faith in unknown movies.

Although truth be told I didn’t totally regret going, but if it had been even a little worse, I would have. Six and a half out of ten. Second-most disappointing trip to the movies I’ve had this year, after Shazam.

And it wasn’t just the unremittingly forlorn tone that bugged me, it was the general social atmosphere. No one trusted one another, there were marauding bandits on the Moon, what?! Astronauts shooting at Brad when he’s not making a move in the slightest? I don’t know what environment the screenwriter grew up in and which he’s living in now, but I think his paranoia and dim view of humanity really didn’t need to get stamped onto a major motion picture. I’m going to make it a point of never seen another movie he writes the script for, unless I see evidence of a marked lift in mood and easing of his misanthropy.

    • also is there any chance we could close the gap between the release of the audio-only version of the reviews, and the YouTube segments? It’s been stretching out to many days lately, and I don’t just want to listen, I want to see! Thanks!
