Summer is winding down and that means we’re finally (hopefully) reaching the last of the big, dumb blockbusters here at Breakfast All Day. And “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw” has got to be the biggest and dumbest of all, so naturally Matt, Alonso and I have some thoughts. We also talk about the excellent indie drama “Luce,” the nap-inducing “The Mountain” starring Jeff Goldblum and “Honeyland,” the documentary about Macedonian bee farmers you never knew you needed in your life. (It’s one of the year’s best films.) We’ve also recorded a spoiler talk for “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” since so many of you asked for it. And over at our Patreon, we discuss a bunch of new trailers, including “The Lighthouse” and “The Irishman.” Come hang with us during the dog days.

  1. I was enjoying your Once Upon a Time in Hollywood discussion until the part where Alonso talked about the treatment of the two Manson women vs Tex. Tex got his testicles chewed off by the dog. This is just Alonso looking for something to criticize. It’s hard to to hear people constantly nitpicking things like this when most likely the director was not displaying ill will towards women. People need to chill. And I am a woman saying this. I love to hear your analysis of movies, and I think you are all very intelligent and thoughtful critics. But please bring less politics into it. Unless you know for a face that that Tarantino’s intention was as such. Otherwise you are kind of defaming someone not knowing what they were actually thinking.

    • I agree entirely. I feel like Alonso is too busy being a male ally than really seeing the picture for what it is, at least it that scene. And as Anna Khachiyan of the delightful Red Scare podcast says, it’s all lies. allies, all-lies.

  2. Summer is winding down? I mean sure… but when do you feel like summer is largely over with in LA? Here in Vancouver it’s usually mid-to-late September when the breezes start to feel a bit chilly, so like another six to eight weeks. It’s winding down sure, but there’s still a big chunk of it left!
