Breakfast All Day Podcast: A La Carte With Ashly Stohl

Ashly Stohl and I have known each other since the sixth grade, but we’ve had the pleasure of becoming even better friends as adults — and watching our kids become friends, too. And her kids happen to be her muses, providing the inspiration for the brilliant photographer she’s become. (You can see an example of her work, which is featured in her new book “The Days & Years,” above.) Ashly and I talk about growing up in Los Angeles in the ’80s, being a studious chemistry major at party-school UC Santa Barbara and how becoming a mom inspired her to cultivate her inner artist. She’s also a publisher as the co-founder of Peanut Press Books. Ashly is one of the coolest, most authentic women I know, and I’m so pleased to share our conversation with you. Enjoy.

  1. “I love doing this so much! I get to ”

Well I’m glad this is so fun for you! When I hear that it makes me think maybe coming to the end of the line with Young Turks may have been a blessing in disguise seeing that it frees you up to do more in-depth and personal work in the A La Carte series. Of course the patreon cash I’m sure is paltry compared to salaried work for Cenk, but I am going to rack my brain over the next month to think of some ways we can boost patronage. I guess the most important thing would be to cover shows that attract a large, passionate, well-heeled audience, and then to publicize your commentary videos in places where they will be seen, noted, and in ways that serious tempt viewers.

  2. As far as the C programming language goes, this is the best (and only) example I’ve seen that deals with the topic. Golden Boy, maybe the only TV anime series I have ever recommended, because it’s a solid comedy and delightfully raunchy. Anyway here’s episode six, the final one, which deals with a software company where they program in C.

  3. What’s the name of the song at the beginning of the podcast? As always, great interview Ms. Lemire! 🙂
