Breakfast All Day Podcast 2/21/19

Image result for academy awardsIs awards season over yet? It seems to just keep going and going, but the end is in sight with this weekend’s Academy Awards ceremonyAlonso, Matt, Ben and I run through who we think will win and should win the Oscar in various categories, with “Roma” and Alfonso Cuaron among the favorites (as well as “The Favourite”). Of course, we also review the big, new release of the week, the beautifully animated sequel “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.” And we recap the extremely eventful seventh episode of “True Detective.” It’s an honor just to be nominated, as they say, and we’re honored that you chose to join us. Enjoy.

  1. Saw the shorts few weeks ago as a “girls night out” event.

Animation . . . Loved Bao … My friends didn’t realize the bun maker was a woman so it didn’t make any sense to them. Hahaha. Animal Behavior was the evening favorite. So silly. So funny. The film, Emily, was thought-provoking as 70 is our average age. Food for thought.

Drama . . . Most of the films were so stressful they were difficult to enjoy. The story about the lost boy calling his mother made my friend so anxious she had to leave the room. The theater did post a warning on the screening room door, still we weren’t prepared for the multitude of depressing themes. At the end of the evening we noticed several attendees stop to complain to the theater manager about the subject matter. He did what he could by posting the warning and drawing people’s attention to the sign as they entered the theater,

  2. Watched the live action shorts this past weekend and had the same reaction. It was grueling. I had to walk out of Detainment for a while. I remember the case distinctly…happened when I was around 12. Hearing all those details of the case was too much for me. It’s probably the second-best made film, but to what end? I’m not sure.

  3. Hi, Christy! My husband and I love your podcast! I second Guillermo’s message re: the shorts. I am particularly torn between “Period. End of Sentence.” and “Black Sheep.”

I am also wondering about some of the tech categories, including Sound Mixing, Sound Editing, and Film Editing, as well as Production Design and Costume Design.

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts!
    Lauren

    • Thanks, Lauren! Let’s go with:
      Sound mixing — First Man
      Sound editing — First Man
Film editing — Bohemian Rhapsody because it was such an ordeal to piece it together into something coherent
      Production design — Black Panther
Costume design — I’d love to see Black Panther win but it’ll probably be The Favourite (which is great, too)

  4. Hey Guys!

Cant begin to thank you for posting these podcasts!

Pleeeeeeeese open your own you tube channel, you will have a great following.

Thanks a lot for doing this

    A fan

  5. I think Roma is little overrated but I hope it wins so I don’t have to listen to people whine about Green Book winning every time someone mentions the Oscars.

  6. Regarding Matt’s opening remarks about his neighbor that didn’t like Roma, is it possible that he only saw it at home on Netflix. Bret Easton Ellis has talked about this extensively on a recent podcast, and I believe Christy was emphatic back in November or December that you had to go see in on the big screen if you didn’t want to do yourself a big disservice. And sure enough, when I gave it a whirl at home, on Netflix, it just didn’t work for me, I couldn’t get through the first five minutes. And perhaps a film that only works in the theatre, has a very serious handicap. I mean for the rest of its life, for the next fifty years (notwithstanding technological improvements) it’s now living as a cripple. Nobody can enjoy it fuly anymore unless it’s being run as a retro feature at one of the rare vintage theatres. Should a movie with that kind of glaring problem of sputtering out on the aftermarket really be handed the Best Picture statuette? I sure as shit hope not. Give it to The Favorite. It wasn’t quite as good as I hoped given Christy’s effusive praise, but it was never boring, and always artfully composed, and I left the theatre satisfied.

    • ChrisWright:

Now it’s the day after the Oscars and we know Green Book won for best picture.

I’ve heard a lot of criticism of ROMA as not worthy of Best Picture nom. Personally, I saw it on Netflix and loved it before it was nominated. My friends hated it. And they saw it on the big screen. They complained about the story. What made it exceptional? For me, the normalcy of everyday life . . . especially in Mexico . . . because those of us with no roots or knowledge of Mexico hear about how dangerous and forbidding it is. That story showed us the normalcy of life and the beauty of a country the writer/director grew up loving. The human condition is what every good story hopes to portray, right.

    • So glad to hear a little bit about the shorts. They were so good and dark. A guy in my movie club had nightmares about detainment. I thought the first two were incredibly powerful. Skin was shock value. I am very surprised they are making it into a full length feature. I don’t know that I could handle that much of it.

    • @chris wright..

There are many movies like that but I think the biggest problem is that it only had a week long (if any) screening window in most places. It’s hard to appreciate a movie that is cinematography heavy movie on your iPhone like most people watch movies.

But I also think it’s a movie that doesn’t have a lot of rewatchability in general. It movies too slow without the suspense.

Green Book won because of the preferencial ballot and because cinefiles hate that Neflix didn’t give it a full theatrical run (like Amazon does) and because it’s subtitled.
