What the Flick?! Podcast 11/30/18

Image result for anna and the apocalypseI know I say it every week but it really is a jam-packed episode of the What the Flick?! Podcast. Christmas movies, awards contenders, cheesy Netflix flicks — we’ve got ’em all. Alonso, Matt and I review the Scottish rom-com-zom musical “Anna and the Apocalypse”; Andy Serkis’ performance-capture take on “The Jungle Book,” “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle”; the exorcism thriller “The Possession of Hannah Grace” and the Japanese anime time-travel adventure “Mirai.” We also play catch-up with the latest from the Coen Brothers, the star-studded Western anthology “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” and the feel-good Netflix holiday comedies “The Christmas Chronicles” and “The Princess Switch.” And Alonso and Matt sing the praises of the musical documentary “Bathtubs Over Broadway.” Phew!

    1:08:40 – 1:10:26 Recap and Next Week’s Show

  2. Thank you for another fun week. It is great to listen to the three of you together. The affection is audible. LOVED Buster Scruggs. Probably more than you guys did. It was beautifully shot, thank you. But I did think each story set up for the next one, even though they probably weren’t written in order that way. I actually got more out of Mortal Remains on the second viewing.
Also thank you for the validation on my watching the Princess Switch!!!! I can’t believe you even discussed it!

  3. Love the podcast especially now that the audio is perfect. Look forward to the show each week, keep up the great work.

  4. I”VE BEEN TELLING MY FRIENDS THE SAME THING!!!!!! Nick in the Christmas Switch Looks like Soulman. Honestly, he looks like he was in blackface. but he is a beautiful human being.

  5. I really love the longform podcast format. I’m torn now whether I prefer the videos because they were GREAT, and were how I was exposed to you in the first place, but this feels a lot like just getting to hang out with y’all at the dining room table and not so much having to flip through and select videos and all that. Take your time with whether you’ve got cooking, but this has been great. Oh, also, the audio is really good. So. Whatever you did, it’s working 🙂 You guys are the best!

    • Thanks, Katie! You are indeed with us at the dining room table. And the thing I figured out I was doing wrong is so basic and lame that I won’t even bother boring you with it. But thanks!

  6. Yay Anna and the Apocalypse is playing in my city on Friday. Such a crazy premise I’m excited to see how it all works together.

  7. Hi, may I ask why did you guys stop uploading videos on your YouTube channel? That has been my go to resource for movie reviews and I really miss it.

Also, have you guys seen Vice yet?

    • We were canceled in August, thanks for asking. But we live on as a podcast, as you see. I’ve seen Vice, and I’m sure we’ll all have seen it in time to review it when it comes out.

  8. Buster Scruggs. Egads. Not for me. Five minutes in and the blood/gore overwhelmed my nausea quotient.
Princess Switch. Again, five minutes in and I was out for the count. This from a woman who watches non-stop Hallmark Christmas in July and the entire Hallmark Christmas season (Oct to Dec 25th), and now Lifetime Christmas films. If Netflix intends to overtake the Christmas genre they’ll have to do better than regurgitate Prince/Pauper.

My hat’s off to those of you who endured and/or enjoyed both those films.

  9. Late comment but it’s nice to see Mirai getting attention. Mamoru Hosoda is one of the key talents in animation today. His best movie, “Wolf Children,” is about a single mom trying to raise her (part wolf) kids and she has to be of the most awesome moms ever depicted onscreen.

Also, regarding the prior review of “Shoplifters” and it’s non-cloying portrayal of kids, you can always count on Kore-eda for that. Whenever I hear any kind of discussion on great child performances, I instantly think of Kore-eda’s work.
