The typically charismatic Hugh Jackman is horribly miscast in “The Front Runner” as Gary Hart, the Colorado senator who was on his way to the Democratic nomination — and probably the presidency — before a sex scandal derailed his career in 1987. Jackman seems too old, too mad and too world-weary to be the idealistic, 46-year-old face of the future. Director Jason Reitman attempts an Altmanesque approach to depicting this pivotal time in American history, when privacy is about to become a thing of the past, but his film lacks both insight and bite. It’s got a great cast, though. My mixed review, at RogerEbert.com.
