Come walk on the moon with us on the latest episode of the What the Flick?! Podcast. “First Man” is the biggie of the week as we venture deeper into awards season. But Alonso, Matt and I have plenty of other movies to review, including the political satire “The Oath,” the Timothee Chalamet-Steve Carell addiction drama “Beautiful Boy,” the super-stylish puzzle box “Bad Times at the El Royale,” an excellent Netflix drama called “Private Life” and the kid-friendly horror sequel “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween.” We’re loving doing this podcast for you guys and we have more things in store, so thanks for sticking with us.

  1. FINALLY! I keep refreshing the page, lol I was sweating like I was watching the opening of “Touch of Evil.”

    • Just to reiterate Christian, I have never ever heard Christy do a review of a TV show. As seeing as this podcast is being recorded from her living room, this is probably not going to happen. If What the Flick?! makes it back to YouTube and you get Meredith and the other folks involved again then who knows. I think you’d need some monetization to make that work though. i.e. we’d have to become patrons through Patreon.

And I have to say, I really enjoyed the first two seasons of Better Call Saul, but the series premiere of season three turned me off so much I never tried it again. I guess I could have powered through to see if it improved, but I just had better things to do and watch. Viewing a full season of a TV series is so much more labour intensive that going to see a two-hour movie, especially if it doesn’t turn you on. It’s a little bit selfish and short-sighted to simply ask someone to review a show and provide no reasons. You’ve got to sell them on it, tickle their imagination with artful suggestions of what makes it so intriguing.

  2. Hey guys, thanks for doing these every week.

Tamara Jenkins’ ‘The Savages’ was released in 2007. You may have been thinking of the Oliver Stone thing, and that was 2012.

  3. Not that you confused the Jenkins and the Stone film, but that you probably just heard a similar title circa 2011.

  4. Thanks to WTF gang for keeping up with the incredible weekly content. Even if I’m still semi-upset at Alonso’s review of “Rogue One”. 🙂 Just checking if you will review “Juliet, Naked”, as it wasn’t shown in our area. Was it a hidden gem like “Destination Wedding” & how much you loved that one? Alonso, I did buy your paperback “it Have Yourself a Movie Little Christmas” last month. Cheers & have a fun weekend to all.

    • Thanks, Frank! I’ve seen Juliet, Naked and thought it was totally charming. I’m a fan of Ethan Hawke in scruffy dad mode. Not sure whether my friends have seen it, though.

  5. Thanks for doing this podcast. My dad and I would both watch What the Flick religiously and talk about it over the phone (we live far from each other). It was a nice bonding source for us so I am glad that we now have this to continue those conversations. Much appreciation from Chicago.

  6. While I do enjoy the podcast, not being able to admire the beauty of Christy anymore is a drag. I anxiously await the day when she returns to video.

  7. Glad to catch up with you guys again. I just wanted to point out that “First Man” will have a strong resonance for Baby Boomers who were growing up during the space race. The moment Ed White’s name gets mentioned for example we know what’s coming. Having the chance to see those Apollo heroes lives fleshed out a bit was very rewarding. I want to urge those in your audience personally familiar with Medicare to see “First Man” in a theater.

  8. In discussing The Oath, Alonso says it is “ecumenical” in the treatment of it’s subject matter. Did he mean equitable or even-handed?

  9. I’ve got an idea: What if you do a “home video/streaming” pick at the end of each episode. Something like a, “We didn’t like this, so try this instead!” recommendation.

BTY, Bad Times At the El Royale is incredible. It’s slick and fun, but also surprisingly deep and emotional. Sure, it’s long, but my interest never wavered. Loved it.

  10. First Man got to me more emotionally than either of Chazelle’s other two features. I saw it after seeing Free Solo and I think these two men have much in common.

  11. Just wanted to say bonjour and merci from my wife and I up here in the Toronto area. We enjoy What The Flick?! and have been watching/listening for a few years now. We miss the show from TYT but are delighted it has found a new home, despite the lack of Matt’s shirt volume and the great T-shirts that Christy and Alonso wear.

By the way, my wife finds the sign-off from Christy to be exceedingly charming. She insists that Christy always say “bye” last.

Thanks again and if there’s ever a Patreon or something of the sort, we’ll back it.

  12. Hi Christy,

I saw First Man this weekend on a beautiful IMAX screen with great sound. What an experience, I might go see it again. And I’m going back to see A Star is Born next weekend.

There are quite a few IMAX screens opening here in India now, though this is the first one in my city. It opened this summer and I was waiting to go see a movie there. The multiplex is just 5 min away from my house, so I’m pleased, I can go see movies in IMAX whenever I like.(the Imax ticket prices are $6.50 on weekends and $4.50 on weekdays, so pretty good!)

Now if only I can get to see Roma on that big screen. It’s unlikely to get a theatrical release here unless it wins best picture.

I was just listening to the podcast while typing this and heard that you saw it on IMAX too!! But 7.9? I think I’d rate it higher 🙂

  13. Again, you all have been referencing Rotten Tomatoes since the show started. RT should put you all on their YouTube channel now that you’re not on TYT, or Matt should try to set you up on Moviefone, lol.

  14. I’ve had a mad few months and so I think I stopped watching your YouTube show on Young Turks, probably a week or so before it got cancelled. Just logged on to catch up and get re-immersed this afternoon and absolute horror! I was gutted. I’ve been a massive fan since 2010 and tuning into you guys, hearing your thoughts and enjoying your banter and friendships with each other has put thousands and thousands of smiles on my face. I’m thrilled that you are finding a way to continue doing what you do for us, and I personally really appreciate it. I will be going back over these previous podcasts and listening every week from now on! I’d love to see you do something filmed again one day if you are able, maybe even a new YouTube channel, but honestly I’m just happy to hear you guys doing your thing in any way that you can 🙂

    • Oh, and just to support what some others have posted already, if ever you decide to ask for donations from patrons to get things up and running visually, it is absolutely something I would contribute to so that I could see you all squabble again!

  15. The story of First Man, an introspective of the space program from the astronauts POV, fascinating. I remember where I was, the group I was with, as we watched Neil Armstrong descend those steps and utter the words, “one small step … “ never realizing the sacrifice those brave people made.

The up-in-your-face, shakey cam got old pretty quickly. Stop it!

The sound – awesome. Felt like I was in that tiny capsule along with the astronauts. The fumes, the heat. Dang!

  16. Thank you for reviving What The Flick! I was a huge fan of the show. Are you planning on moving over to apple’s podcasts? I think that makes sense for you guys.
