What the Flick?! Podcast 9/27/18

Image result for jane fonda barbarellaYou guys seem to like this What the Flick?! Podcast thing we’re doing, so we’re just gonna keep on doing it. This week is more packed than ever. Alonso and I have reviews of Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart’s comedy “Night School,” “The Old Man & the Gun” (which is supposedly Robert Redford’s last film), the animated “Smallfoot,” a modern-day take on “Little Women,” and the delightful documentary “Tea With the Dames.” We also play catch-up with the excellent HBO documentary “Jane Fonda in Five Acts” (hence the totally gratuitous “Barbarella” photo above) and the Western “The Sisters Brothers,” which Alonso liked a lot more than I did. I promise we’re working on getting the podcast up on a platform, but for now, we hope you enjoy it here.

  1. Good show, cant wait to see Sisters Brothers. Joan Jett wasn’t the only female of her times that rocked btw, just the “most mainstream” one. “I Love RnRoll” was a cover song too….sorry just getting it out there. Anways peace and love 😉

  2. Thank you so much for continuing this! I have watched What The Flick since the beginning and your videos have accompanied me on my commutes to high school, university, work, etc. for so many years. I’ve made decisions on what to see and not see based on your reviews. I came into contact with so many things from Vera Farmiga’s Higher Ground to The Americans due to What the Flick. I’m so glad there is another way for you guys to keep at it, and hopefully the fan base continues to grow and support the podcast!

  3. Would love to hear from Matt about his new gig! As a long-time listener, I’m really glad y’all are finding time to keep this going.

  4. Just found out that you guys kept What the Flick going as a podcast. I loved the dynamic between you all and really valued your opinions. Hope to keep listening every week!

  5. Keep up the great work! I will say that when you do find a more permanent home, I hope that it is video based. It just seems natural to show a 10sec snippet from the movie. But regardless where you land, I am sure to follow 🙂

  6. When What the Flick ended on TYT I didn’t realize that Matt’s employment there ended as well. Wasn’t he the head of programming or something?

I fear that the show will now be limited to just Christy and Alonzo–not that there’s anything wrong with that. They were always the core of WTF anyway.

BTW, I finally saw Hereditary the other day based largely on your positive review. Oddly, audiences don’t seem to have liked it as much as the critics. I found it creepy and genuinely scary. However, like you I thought that the ending was a letdown. It turned the film into a half-baked Rosemary’s Baby, except that in the case of Rosemary’s Baby at least the ending was a reasonable culmination of the story that preceded it.

As long as you guys enjoy doing this show you’ve got a loyal audience that will follow every week. Keep up the good work!

  7. Thanks Christy and Alonso! I’ve been a big fan of WTF for years, hope you can make this work. Audiard is great, I strongly recommend “Read My Lips” and “Rust and Bone.”

  8. I haven’t seen anyone else mention this, but you can add What The Flick?! to your podcast app (I’m personally using Pocket Casts) by manually entering this link http://christylemire.com/feed/
This will show you the previous WTF?! podcasts going back to August 30th and you should receive all new podcasts when they are posted.

Hope some folks find this helpful.

  9. Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus – thanks so much for keeping this going! I am always looking forward to Thursdays so I can listen to you lovely people.

  10. Congratulations to Matt re. his new gig. I hope he can continue on the podcast and (fingers crossed) a new show on YouTube. If he can’t, I hope you’ll bring in some of the great back-up folks you called on, such as Bibbs. It’s great to hear different voices and views.

  11. Yes. Yes. And, yes. Do keep this going. We are definitely keeping up with listening to you guys. Congrats to Matt but really, really hoping that he joins you guys for some of the podcast recordings.

  12. Glad to see y’all sticking together! Keep the podcasts coming and dammit, you’re still the best thing since Siskel & Ebert … there’s a place in the sun for you guys, I just know it, and I hope you can find it.

    • I agree wholeheartedly with the comparsion to Siskel and Ebert, it’s one I made myself a couple years back once the quality of What the Flick reached a certain level of sophistication and polish. There’s something infinitely more satisfying about listening to a conversation, than just reading a dry mercenary write-up.

  13. Thanks for doing this, Christy et al. I’ve been following WTF for six years, and I was really bummed to see you off of TYT. I’m grateful to you all for continuing with the podcast – you’re great!

  14. Thanks for keeping What The Flick going!!! Thanks Alonso for telling us about these on Linoleum Knife! It was depressing there for a while to think we were left with only the disproportionate cacophony of superhero blockbuster fetishism that passes for film criticism these days. Christy, have you considered posting these to Wine The Flick?

  15. Jane Fonda has certainly lived an interesting life. Good for her for finally coming to Act 5 where she’s directing her own life … and helping other women. She didn’t sit still, she kept moving. Bravo.

  16. Thank you so much for Keeping What the flick alive ! Although I miss seeing your faces the podcast format is so much better, the reviews don’t feel rushed now ! Thank you for always giving great content
