Our second What the Flick?! podcast episode begins with the sad news that Burt Reynolds — one-of-a-kind, swaggering Hollywood superstar — has died at 82. Alonso Duralde and I discuss his legendary career, as well as the movies Alonso saw at the Venice Film Festival and further changes at the Academy Awards. We also review the horror prequel “The Nun,” the Jennifer Garner revenge thriller “Peppermint” and the Hal Ashby documentary “Hal,” and we reminisce about the latest Christy by Request movie, “It Happened One Night.” It’s a packed show, so listen and enjoy — and thanks so much for sticking with us!

  1. Burt Reynolds was great, consider that his peak was during the time when many other popular stars were at their peak.

  2. Really happy about this! Hope you publish it to as an RSS feed for podcasts apps so I can listen to it at work. 🙂

    • In Firefox:

right click on the page, hit View Page Info, click the Media tab, list by type, find the one file that says Audio, then save it to your hard drive. It’s in .mp3 format. Then just copy it across to your phone or iPod.

It’ll be a similar method in other browsers.

  3. Really like the podcast format. You guys were the only channel I steadily watched on the TYT network, and despite our complete differences in political opinion, I appreciate hearing your reviews not only as professional critics, but from a differing perspective (as I believe we need more of this in the world today).

Would you consider putting these podcasts up on an iTunes feed so it’s easier to access? I also listen to Alonso’s Linoleum Knife, so maybe he can assist in doing this, and also improving audio quality?

Thanks, and keep up the good work

  4. I’m so happy you’re continuing on. After following what the flick so closely every Thursday for new movie release reviews I’d just gotten hooked on all the extra content covering trailers, news in the biz and box office analysis just to have it all cease so suddenly!
I already followed Alonso and Dave all over their podcast base and guest spots, I’m just overjoyed I won’t lose Christy and all her takes on movies which, in retrospect, I seem to most share in tastes.

  5. TheI don’t think they even planned to have The Nun prequel when they started filming Conjuring 2 because the studio ordered some pretty extensive reshoots after the film was finished and all the reshot scenes were about the nun subplot which explains the 140 minutes runtime.
I would love to see the nunless version to that film.

The main reason why Burt Reynolds didn’t won the oscar was because he was pretty open in his dislike of the movie.
He fired his agent immediately after be saw it and was openly toxic toward the film insted of promoting it so it’s a mystery to me why he would hope to win the academy award for a role he openly hated so much

  6. Glad you guys are still doing this; miss the visuals but hey one can’t have everything; critic response is part of the pubic discourse; miss Siskel & Ebert….this is the next best thing…good stuff!

  7. Loving the podcast talks so far. I miss seeing your faces on WTF. Still very sad TYT didn’t keep the channel going anymore. Hopefully all four of you can reunite on your “Wine the flick?!” series on your youtube channel Christy!

    • It’s been a few months since we’ve had a new Wine the Flick, but I figure she’ll get back into it once the fall arrives, it’s not really geared towards the summer I think.

Also I was thinking that Christy wanted to branch out in Wine the Flick and Christy by Request because things didn’t feel right with Young Turks. Which has become nearly unwatchable since Trump broke Cenk’s brain.

  8. Thanks again for continuing the show. Over the years, even though I love movies, I’ve had less and less time to watch them. For some reason, just by watching your quick reviews I’ve always felt that it has allowed me to retain some connection to movies and to know what hidden gems to look out for when I have the time.

  9. Speaking of Yorgos Lanthimos, I gave Killing of a Sacred Deer a go last month on Bret Easton Ellis’ recommendation, thought it was really strong. Then gave The Lobster a go last week, and it was even better. Went back to listen to the What the Flick?! review and saw everyone loved it there too. Had no idea Yorgos had another film coming out though. The Favourite, let’s see what that’s about…

In September 2015, it was announced that Yorgos Lanthimos would direct the film, from a screenplay by Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara, which was described as “a bawdy, acerbic tale of royal intrigue, passion, envy, and betrayal.

The story focuses on the behind-the-scenes politics between two cousins jockeying to be court favourites during the reign of Queen Anne in the early 18th century. It stars Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz, Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, James Smith, and Mark Gatiss. Filming took place at Hertfordshire, England. Lanthimos stated that a major reason for filming at the Hatfield House was because “From the beginning, I had this image of these lonely characters in huge spaces.” It’s scheduled to be released in the United States on November 23rd, 2018.

In an interview for IndieWire, Rachel Weisz described the film as a comedy, comparing it to a “funnier, sex driven” All About Eve.

Olivia Colman stated that playing the Queen was “a joy because she sort of feels everything,” and when asked if the character was nothing more than a petulant child, she stated that, “She’s just a woman who is underconfident and doesn’t know if anyone genuinely loves her. She has too much power, too much time on her hands.

Also Christy may want to get a little closer to the mic.

  10. Thank you for doing this podcast! I looked forward to WTF videos each week and I would miss wTF Reviews if they completely Away.

  11. I’m so glad you’re all continuing the great reviews and discussions from WTF – I’m really loving the podcast! Hope to see it on iTunes eventually, too.

  12. Thank you so much for putting this on. I always waited by my phone on Thursday afternoons for your reviews on WTF so this will be a nice substitute:)

  13. I love the podcasts, but you know you could post these on YouTube in video form. I am sure if one of you or collectively created your own channel on YouTube, you could have a following in no time, especially if Ben could shout it out on The Young Turks. I wanna see you guys, even in a one hour video. I miss you 🙁

  14. I’m so glad you’re still around!!! You’ve been my #1 repository of happy feels for YEARS, and as result I’m so fond of you all… please keep it up… I’ll pay!

  15. THANK YOU for doing this! WTF has been so inspiring to me since I have moved to L.A. Your reviews have widened my understanding of films incredibly!

  16. I add my voice to the many: WTF was definitely for me THE best movie channel on youtube. Great format, in depth reviews of all kinds of movies as an international (italian) viewer, all without losing funny banter as well. But on top of all you are a really passionate group of professionals with wonderful insights in to the world and history of cinema, a wealth of knowledge on the matter so thank you for keeping it up! If there is anything we viewers can do to help more actively let us know. Love you all Christy, Alonso, Matt and Ben.

  17. Thank you so much for continuing in this format. I first discovered Ben and yourself during your specific seasons of At the Movies, and quickly realised it was you and Ben, not the partners, that I could trust with insightful reviews, and matching with my own interests in film. I was sad to say goodbye to that show, but then overjoyed to see the two of you together with What the Flick. Didn’t know what to think of Alonso at first, love him now. I can decipher if I will like/dislike a film from his perspective. Matt? My favorite pop culture fanboy. So glad I found this version, didn’t realize wtf was gone until yesterday. Keep up the great work!

  18. I was also very disappointed that WTF was cancelled on TYT 😪😪😪 It was my favourite show by far and I’ll definitely keep listening to the podcast😘 You guys are awesome!!!

  19. I could be just stupid but I can’t see this and the first episode on the Apple podcast app……where can I download these? Looking forward to listening. Terrible decision to cut the YouTube channel. You guys along wit Mark Kermode and Screen Junkies are my favourite critics.

  20. Just found out about The Young Turks’ stupid decision to cancel your show. Dammit, you guys are the best thing since Siskel & Ebert. Thanks for continuing the show in podcast form. I will follow your podcasts and tell all my online friends to. Hope you are a tremendous success on your own.

  21. I really felt let down when i heard that wtf was cancelled, then i discovered the podcast 🙂 you’re doing an amazing job please keep up. You’re the highlight of my week. A lot of love and appreciation of your work from France. Bravo !
