What the Flick?! Podcast 8/30/18

After 8 1/2 years, we’ve had to say goodbye to What the Flick?!, as you may have heard. But for the time being, at least, we’re reincarnating our YouTube film review show as a podcast. This week, Matt Atchity and I talk the historical thriller “Operation Finale,” the completely charming Netflix rom-com “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,”  a playful and inventive documentary called “John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection” and “Destination Wedding” (above), which reunites Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder in wonderfully wicked ways. It’s just plain mean, and we loved it.

This is our first podcast so it’s admittedly a little rough. Eventually we may even get a theme song. But please stick with us — and thanks for all your kind words and support. Listen and enjoy.

  1. Thank you so much for doing this. I would’ve been lost if I had no version of a What the Flick?! show. Not only do you review the current blockbusters like 99% of the people on the internet, you review small indie and lesser known films that otherwise nobody would hear about. I really appreciate it. P.S. Christy does not look a day over 30 🙂

  2. I’m so glad that you are finding a platform to keep the show alive! Of course we all want to SEE you again, but this will be a very nice placeholder. I’ll just imagine you guys while I play the podcast!

  3. I’m so glad you’re giving this a go. You’re the only critics I pay attention to – all of you.

  4. Sorry to learn of WTF’s cancellation. I am so glad to see you carrying on, I like to see the range of opinions among folks that are obviously friends. My wife and I have our own discussion during the show and it almost feels we’re part of the group.

  5. Missed you guys. I think your first podcast went well. You’ve pushed me closer to watching “To All the Boys…”

Maybe have a contest to name the podcast.

  6. This is great! I have been watching What The Flick for years now and honestly while it’s unfortunate that the show got cancelled it’s great that you guys thought of your audience and began something like this.

  7. Glad you’re going to keep it going. WTF has been my first stop for movie reviews for a while now. Good luck getting the new show going. Matt, set up the video camera! Thank you all for what you do.

  8. Thanks you two!!!
I’m not sure which I like the most:
    1. A glass of single malt scotch.
    2. A big fat doobie.
    3. Movie reviews by the critics from WTF.
Ah hell, who am I kidding… it’s all three simultaneously!
By the by, I have a suggestion for a new name:
    “Three critics and sometimes Ben”.
    HaHa
    Take care & thanks again.

  9. I am so up set that u guys are no longer on TYT.
Love WTF, was so happy Seeing how the show was expanding. This was a total shock.

    • I have been watching the show for over 5 years and am deeply saddened you guys are no longer on YouTube. What happened? I had no idea WTFlick was cancelled. Literally went to google after not seeing an upload for weeks. Its like the end of an era…..

I hope you guys can continue doing your thing on this platform. I honestly cant imagine a world w/o my what the flick reviews!

  10. I don’t watch a lot of movies, but I watch WTF religiously. Thank you for being my Cliff’s notes to movies and for the great conversations. And occasionally I’ve been convinced to watch things I would never have watched otherwise.

  11. My wife and I have made a Friday evening ritual of WTF and Martinis, and we’re delighted that WTF will live on. I guess tonight we’ll be listening on the MacBook. Don’t worry too much about production values and whatnot. Just get your four mugs back on YouTube and if you set up a Go Fund Me or a subscription, we’ll chip in. WTF truly is the best review show since Ebert. Until you get back on your feet, I hope you’ll stick with straight film reviews. The industry news and TV reviews are fine, but they should be secondary.

  12. Get the podcast on every platform you can (especially Spotify). Even though I prefer a video version, I’m happy you got this up and running so quickly. Keep ‘m coming, and I’ll we’ll listening.

  13. I hate podcasts. So you know it is a BIG DEAL for me to say I’ll be listening to yours from now on. I can’t believe WTF is finished, *SOB* and I will follow you whether on film or audio. PLEASE COME BACK in some sort of visual format. Your discussions were and are, stimulating and world opening for me, encouraging me to see films I might not have picked on my own. (And Christy reminds me to drink my water….just sayin’)

And now I’m going to open a bottle of really good wine and mourn the loss of yet another great thing. Man…the Village Voice AND What the Flick in the same week? On top of everything else??? The world has shifted off its axis.

There’s a really loyal fan base out here waiting to hear your film discussions in ANY form. Keep wrestling with the equipment, Matt! Keep these great reviews coming!

  14. I was super bummed to hear of WTF’s demise, but am so thankful to hear that a version would be available on podcast. Hopefully you guys can find a visual platform again soon. We all love to see your smiling faces!

  15. Thank you for continuing WTF?!. I appreciate your reviews of blockbuster and smaller films and the oldies. I picked up the movie “Disobedience” because of your recommendation a while back, and afterwards I read the book too. I hope Christy’s hydration station makes a comeback. Maybe with the giant wine glass?!

  16. Awesome!! Glad you guys didn’t skip a beat and resurfaced. Now if we can somehow see your faces? Anyways Happy Birthday, Christie!

  17. My wife and I miss SEEING you guys review movies. Is it at all possible for one of you to use your phone and record a video while you talk? We really really miss you!!!

  18. I started watching Siskel and Ebert religiously when I was 12 years old, and then sporadically on through the many variations after Gene passed away. WTF was the first review show of any kind that I consistently watched since Roger and Gene were doing their thing together. Thanks for what you guys bring to the film world and know that we will keep following you guys to your next endevour!

  19. I was a new viewer of What The Flick!? just for it to get cancelled! Thanks for keeping it running in a new form, so I could still continue listening to your picks for the week. Keep it coming!

  20. Could you upload it on YouTube too? Much easier to follow there. Just slap a thumbnail on it and call it a day. That would be nice anyway!

  21. I am so sorry that What the Flick got cancelled . I loved the show. I really hope you continue to review movies together as I really enjoy listening to your perspectives

  22. I guess I am out of touch. Just found out about the cancellation now. I am saddened by the news but glad that you are able to keep giving us something! I hope this podcast evolves into something even bigger and better than before and that you benefit from the … unexpected independence? I will follow eagerly and support the new endeavour %100! Live long and prosper and so forth!

  23. Crushed that What The Flick is no more! The world needs more of Christie and Matt and Alonso and Ben! The only thing that can console my wife and I is knowing we can listen to the new podcast. And fingers crossed, we will all get to wish Christie a happy birthday in the comment section one year from now on another episode of this podcast❤️

  24. I am so, so gutted about WTF’s cancellation, this was my favourite show on YouTube. I will be listening in to this for sure but am desperate to SEE you all again. You guys are the absolute greatest. All the best!

  25. Hi Christy,

Just found out about the sad news regarding What the Flick! Hope you guys will continue with some podcast. It’s good and entertaining. Keep up the good work!
If you do the podcast will it be weekly and where can I subscribe?

  26. I am absolutely devastated that What the Flick was canceled by TYT. It was one of the 2 or 3 shows–including everything on television and streaming services–that I watched religiously every week. Of course, I am greatly relieved that you have decided to continue as a podcast.

Please, please, please consider offering some sort of voluntary subscriber support, such as Patreon, so you guys can have a budget that allows you to go visual.

Finally, let me express my deep appreciation for the work you do and the show you have produced for these many years. For me it is the true successor to Siskel and Ebert, which I also watched religiously for 20 years. I hope that the new show–in whatever form–lasts for many years to come.

  27. I just finished listening to your first episode. I enjoyed it, and I am immensely gratified that you both sounded committed to giving this new show a real go, bringing Alonso and Ben on board and continuing to enhance the production. I always fear in situations like this that the content creators start to feel like George Harrison at the end of the Beatles, who said something like “In the end it was much more fun you you than for us.” It sounds like it is still fun for you as well, which is great.

  28. I don’t really comment on websites or YouTube, but I have been such a fan of all the work you all have done on WTF. I discovered the show right before I started film school and I am graduating this spring, and you guys have been incredibly inspiring to me along the journey. So although I’m beyond sad that it won’t exist in the same format, I’m so excited that all of you are still down to make it work. Sending SO much love and thanks and appreciation and all the earnest emotions to everyone involved.

  29. Really bummed to learn that WTF was cancelled. It has been my go-to resource for what is worth seeing at the cinema. Thank you for doing this podcast; it’s just not the same since we are unable to see what container Christy is using for her “water.” I hope you all find a way to continue reviewing movies. Please keep us updated as to where we might be able to see you again.

  30. Horrified that you were cancelled. Read that TYT was pulling support and then…no more WTF updates. Agree with all the comments posted. You were my favorite site, always the treat at the end (that W) of my long list of subscriptions. Christy, loved your charming goodbye at the end of the show and, as far as I’ve heard, the only woman that liked ‘Under the Skin’ as much as me. Will miss checking out Matt’s shirts, sometimes more interesting than the trailer. And just when I figured out what lineoleum knife was about, guess that’s the last I’ll see of Alonso, for now, as long as we don’t lose his many opinions too. Plz do entice Ben back as his schedule permits, love his quiet humor and thoughtful responses. Will follow you all to any format just, please, keep reviewing and keep us looped in to your whereabouts

  31. TYT canning Nomiki was bad, but this might be even worse. Put this podcast up on iTunes so I can subscribe and listen on the go please!

  32. Please please continue. I miss WTF so much. This was a great podcast episode. I will faithfully see what you guys come up with in the future.

  33. I was oblivious that WTF was cancelled as I simply noticed there were no new videos for the show which felt so wrong. So by the power of Google I searched “Was What the Flick cancelled?”, and lo, I was brought here. Good luck and much success on this new venture. Perhaps consider a Kickstarter to get you up and running. Best to all of you.

  34. I’m kind of depressed, but happy that you are continuing the show in one form or another. I was one of the very first subscribers, way back when Cenk was Cenking up the score, and I pretty much watched every review you probably ever did.

  35. Glad you guys are giving it a go, and I’m hoping you even find a sponsor to help out. Thanks for all the great content over the years, you’re the best! Please keep going!

  36. Yes! Thank you for continuing on in some format. I was missing the show SO HARD. It’s going to sound strange, but what the flick has been a comforting part of my routine for so long. And I agree with what others have said, I really appreciate that you talk about all things film, and indie flicks and such and not just big blockbuster reviews which there are dozens of out there. Love you all and can’t wait to see (or hear rather) what else you do with this. <3

  37. I couldn’t figure out what happened to What the Flick. Just found out. You guys are seriously the only thing I would watch on The Young Turks. I will follow you guys in you next incarnation.

  38. Love all four of you critics, please keep it going. Thought you were just taking a week off or something, but here we are. Very lame TYT didn’t supply at least be a “final episode”, i was upset at first, but you guys haven’t missed a beat it seems. Keep the faith alive!

  39. I need WTF soooo bad! Thank you guys for keep doing it, you guys are the only good ones reviewing not only blockbusters but all the cool indie stuff

  40. Wow. I feel like I’m saying goodbye to a great friend. I have always loved film, and film criticism has always lit me up. When I discovered what the flick, I felt like I was in the film critique class I always wanted. Your insight on film and your perspectives were so enriching, and the show was just so fun. I have watched every episode multiple times over the years. I have severe anxiety problems and watching what the flick always brought me to a happy place. Thank you for the gift. I’ll always revisit it. And I look forward to the podcast and anything else you all do. Thanks to everyone on the panel and the crew you have taught me so much. 🙏🏽

  41. Thank God you guys are still here. I may now eventually be able to forgive Cenk. I will be listening religiously because WTF was the show I always watched, even when I was burnt out on politics and didn’t watch the main show. I’d love it if you were eventually able to return to a video format and will be happy to support you on Patreon or through a membership fee.

    God bless your movie-loving souls!

  42. Thank you guys so much for continuing to find time to do this show. I am a big fan of TYT and I found them first through this show and your GOT reviews. Very excited to see what you do with this show.

  43. Christy, Alonzo, Matt and Ben. Just caught on as to why no new episodes were posting, I was getting worried now I’m kinda distraught. Over the years, I’ve learned to anticipate the different takes that you four have on any given film and could still be surprised often. Those moments are instructive.

I cannot think of a substitute for this show, I really like it more than most of the films actually reviewed. As grateful as I am that there will be a podcast, I’m going to miss the facial expressions and gestures etc. So hoping you guys can do periodic get-together videos for big cinematic events??? Please please please.

  44. I have never donated to Kickstarter or Go Fund Me, but, if it will help get you guys back on Youtube, I’m down to donate.

  45. I was wondering why there were no videos uploaded for the past two weeks; thought that you where on vacation. Sorry that you no longer doing youtube but happy that you will continue in podcast form. I will be following WTF there. Thank you so much and what happened to the new desk?

  46. So I’m going through my You Tube suggestions and see all the reviews up for “The Predator” and I’m like…where is What The Flick? So I go to the home page and see there hasn’t been any videos for almost 2 weeks-then I start reading the comments and I see “I’m going to miss you guys” and other like comments. I’m like WTF(and not What The Flick). I see in the comments a link to your page-here I am. It makes me both sad and angry that What The Flick was cancelled. I remember occasionally seeing Alonzo on some review or another and he would make me laugh. Then I saw all 3 of you and I recognized you from At The Movies while Roger was dealing with the condition that eventually took him from us. My brothers and I grew up watching Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert. Living in Milwaukee,WI-they weren’t that far away-so it felt local in a way. In fact there was a time I was pretty mad at my brother for a completely stupid reason and didn’t talk to him for months. The day I heard Gene Siskel died-I called him-line was busy. Tried again-busy. Of course, I finally decide to talk to him and I can’t get through. Finally I did and it turns out he was trying to call me about Gene’s death. And we talked for over an hour talking about movies-our disagreement with some of his reviews and I apologized for being such an ass-there is more to life than my petty little tantrum Seeing Ben cemented it because I enjoyed his segments on TCM. So I thank you so much for finding a way to continue. I’ll miss seeing Alonzo’s and Matt’s shirts and that dazzling smile of yours that lights up your eyes and the screen(YOU ARE NOT 46!!!! NO WAY!!!) TYT made a major mistake and I am done with them until they come to their senses and bring you back. You made some bad days better with a laugh here and there and your reviews were always so insightful. Thank you.

  47. I haven’t heard “germane” or “tactile” in weeks, and it’s killing me! But, in all seriousness, you guys are the best, and I would be happy to join a crowdfunding effort to sustain the show. Please let us know how we can help!

  48. I missed you guys! Am glad I’ve found you here… please keep the good work going. Christy’s dining room is as good as any 😊.

  49. Very Sad to find out WTF is no longer broadcasting but hope you might come back someplace. Always looked forward to each episode.

  50. Just wanted to chime in here to share my love and utter disappointment over WTF getting cancelled (in video format).

Used to religiously watch Australia’s ABC At The Movies with Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton; they were legit, highly articulate critics who knew how to present ridiculously well on camera whilst also being thoroughly entertaining to watch with their often hilariously contrasting personalities and opinions.

When their show was cancelled after many successful years, it formed a void for not just myself, but friends and family who all thought no show could equal ABC’s At The Movies. That is of course, until a then fellow film student friend introduced me to WTF 😀

What a relief! Legit critics (not just cheap, sensationalist, non-critical YouTube posers) who knew their stuff, were thoroughly enjoyable to watch with a diverse range of opinions and personalities. For years now, I’ve loved sitting down with my partner, checking out WTF reviews of our much loved, hated or entirely unknown films. It’s been a fantastic source of information, entertainment, debate and provided an enjoyable platform to navigate the labyrinth of film criticism.

I will so miss being out and about with my headphones tuned in the voices of Christy, Alonso, Matt & Ben, or being at home with WTF to keep me company on the big screen.

I really cannot thank everyone from WTF enough. You will be deeply missed.

Looking forward to getting my future WTF fixes via the new podcasts😀, though I can’t deny they will struggle to fulfill my WTF What Is Christy Drinking Out Of This Episode fix 😋

    Thanks again WTF.

  51. Thank you! I was so upset to hear the channel was being shut down. It took me completely off guard. I love your reviews. I’ve watched so many of them, for all kinds of films. And after I watch a movie, I can’t wait to hear what you guys think, or what cup you’re going to use lol. I’m sad to see the show go but I’m grateful for the podcast. Thank you for thinking of us!

  52. You guys have become what the old Siskel & Ebert show was for me growing up. You infuriate, entertain, inform, and often inspire.I think Christy is right up there with the all-time greats in film criticism (Pauline Kael, Richard Shickel, Shelia Benson, Etc) Sorry to see the show go (I knew it was a bad sign when they had you pimping with TMZ/E channel style gossip segments. Yuck!).

Anyway, so happy to have you back in any form. I agree Christy, the scenes with Oscar Isaac were absolutely mesmerizing. Another great score by Desplat, and a very tense and suspenseful Argo-like final act. Matt, I love “Silverado”! Talk about great scores. And I let out a joyous yelp when you brought “The Black Mask”. That movie is a blast.

  53. I’m sooooooo slow… I just found out that you got cancelled, I thought you were on a break 🙂 You have to come back, somehow!!! I will miss all 4 of you guys! Even Ben! My heart hurts 🙁

    OMG, no GoT reviews… F***!

  54. SAD! I thought you guys were just taking a break, but I was starting to wonder why no new videos? I’d only been watching for 6-7 months but was loving going back and catching all the old reviews. Best review show since the original Siskel/Ebert show. While Podcasts are an okay substitute please come back in video form somehow, somewhere!

  55. I was wondering why there were no new episodes. Idiots cancelled this? It’s not bad. I love Christy and Matt. Maybe you guys could do a TV show similar to Siskel and Ebert.
