Oh hey, it’s just us, hanging out on Pandora for our latest episode of Breakfast All Day. Alonso and I catch up with the 4K re-release of “Avatar,” which is back in theaters ahead of the sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water.” We also have an early review of “The Good House,” a romantic comedy/drama that reunites Sigourney Weaver with Kevin Kline (and it’s Sigourney Weaver Day around here, which is always welcome). And in news we talk box office, more “Don’t Worry Darling” drama, Russia boycotting the Academy Awards, the Taylor Hawkins tribute concert, new seasons of “True Detective” and “Squid Game” and more. Thanks for joining us!
I got to see Taylor Hawkins perform with FF luckily back in October of last year, he switched places with Dave Grohl for a rousing rendition of “We Are the Champions”, it was so fun!
I saw “Avatar” when it first came out. I was blown away. My sister saw it at about the same time. Her response was “meh”. The difference? I saw it in IMAX 3-D. She saw it on a regular screen.
Shorn of the spectacular visuals it is not a very good movie. I saw it again shortly after the first time I saw it. Then, I knew the plot, etc., so I was able to focus on the mechanics.
EVERYTHING in the movie is there just to give Cameron an opportunity to put spectacular visuals on the screen. There is the plot twist that allows him to present this striking visual. There is the plot twist that allows him to present that spectacular visual.
In a very real sense, it is just an action movie where what plot exists solely to get us from one spectacular set piece to the next spectacular set piece.
I found the visuals equally spectacular the second time I watched the movie. But if you aren’t going to see “Avatar” in IMAX 3-D, don’t bother.
