Breakfast All Day Podcast 2/4/22

Hi, we’re Breakfast All Day, and this is … a new episode of our podcast. This week, my dear friend Katie Walsh joins me to review the panoply of pain that is “Jackass Forever.” Katie and I also talk about the disaster epic “Moonfall,” which is extremely stupid, and yet, not stupid enough. In news, Alonso and I discuss BAFTA nominations, “Knives Out 2,” the Spotify exodus, Spike Lee’s documentary series on Colin Kaepernick, Whoopi Goldberg, Rudy Giuliani, Howard Hesseman, and the Wordle guy selling his game to the NY Times for low seven figures. And over at our Patreon, we have a mind-blowing array of recaps: “The Book of Boba Fett,” “Peacemaker,” “The Gilded Age,” and the first three episodes of “Pam & Tommy.” Thanks as always for joining us!

  1. Been listening to this program and previously What the Flick?! For many years now. It is the first show since “Roger Ebert Presents…” where the critics are both intelligent in film analysis, but also making it accessible and by making it such a hangout experience, the way one would with their friends…

Having said that… purposes of this post… Sundance 2022…

I saw roughly 32 films this year and wanted to recommend the 2 that I felt were the best of the lot…

    1. God’s Country – Thandie Newton gives a career defining performance… it’s an intense and deliberate slow burn neo-noir western…

    2. Palm Trees and Power Lines (terrible title) – one of only 2 films I watched at the festival. What starts off as a coming of age drama, becomes a coming of age nightmare. No spoilers here.

These two are still holding out for distribution… but seek them out… recommending those 2 specifically. I have never given a bad recommendation as they are tailored to the person. They probably won’t be Matt’s cup of tea… but it right yours and Alonso’s alley…

    • Thanks so much for the kind words, Danny, and for hanging out with us all these years! The director of “God’s Country,” Julian Higgins, is a friend of mine and was a guest on the podcast back when I was still doing A La Carte interviews: https://bfastallday.libsyn.com/episode-060-a-la-carte-with-julian-higgins

I haven’t seen his new film yet but I’ve seen the short it’s based on, “Winter Light,” which was excellent. He has a real feel for tone and an eye for texture, and I recall the original film was incredibly tense in a quiet, steady way. Glad to see he’s getting such a great response. Thanks again!

      • Thank you for sharing the link to the Higgins interview. The time he spent practicing the craft of acting in the theatre clearly shows in the deft and refined quality of his actors in God’s Country.

Nice shout out to My Kid Could Paint That…

        Over and out Ms. Lemire.
