A guy walks into a bar. Then another guy walks into another bar. Then a third guy sits at the first bar. And they all have stories to tell in the Russian nesting doll structure that makes up the neo-noir “The Oak Room.” But these characters are simultaneously bland and annoying and their stories aren’t all that compelling, even though commenting on the need to goose them a little to make them more interesting is a consistent through-line.
