We are your valentine and so much more on this jammed episode of Breakfast All Day. Alonso, Ben, Matt and I are together again — three weeks in a row! — with reviews of the sci-fi extravaganza “Alita: Battle Angel,” the horror-comedy sequel “Happy Death Day 2U” and the extremely meta rom-com “Isn’t It Romantic.” We also discuss “Fighting With My Family,” the feel-good Dwayne Johnson wrestling comedy, and we play catch up with Steven Soderbergh’s excellent “High Flying Bird” on Netflix. As always, we recap the latest episode of HBO’s “True Detective” (and this one was gooood), and we discuss the Motion Picture Academy’s ridiculous decision to omit crucial categories from the Oscars broadcast including cinematography (!!!) and editing (!!!). Chocolate counts as a breakfast food, so dig in and enjoy.
UPDATE: A couple hours after I posted this week’s podcast, the Academy announced that it would indeed present all 24 categories live during its Oscar broadcast in response to the massive backlash it received. So maybe we helped …?

I really want y’all to talk about the live action shorts!
I bet we can get to that during our Oscar talk next week. I’ve seen them all. What did you think of them? As the mom of a 9-year-old boy, I was extremely stressed out during four out of five of them.
Matt read my mind. As he was giving his “Alita” review, I thought to myself “Buuuut, did you have a drink beforehand??” 😂
Can’t wait for the Oscar episode next week!!
In True Detective, there were two men on the TV – Scoot and the DA. Seems like the phone call was referring to the DA. He’s pushing hard to both retain the previous conviction and implicate Scoot.
Have any of you heard of “The Wandering Earth”? It’s China’s first big sci-fi blockbuster and it’s grossed $500 million in less than two weeks. One of the stars, Wu Jing, also made Wolf Warrior 2, which ended up being one of the biggest movies of 2017. A lot of movie fans and critics don’t even seem to be aware of their existence, but I think it’s pretty interesting to see these movies explode in China. I saw “The Wandering Earth” in a packed AMC theatre and thought it was pretty solid, but it was also just interesting to see the melding of Hollywood and Chinese sensibilities.
Given the source material, history and talent behind “Alita: Battle Angel,” I was disappointed by how bland and forgettable it was, although the trailers already clued me into that beforehand.
Am I the only person who doesn’t care about the length of the show, and is moreso Glad it’s as long as it is? Seriously people, what else do you have to do that night if you’re already committed to watching the Oscars? What absolutely needs to get done in your life between 10pm and midnight on a night already devoted to giving the previous year’s movies their final sendoff? I still wake up at 6 am for work the next day – and west coast people, wtf is your gripe, for you it’s over by 10! Most movie people I know make a night of it, like a concert – and mentally have that commitment penciled into their heads going into the thing…It’s not like attending/watching something that unexpectedly goes on an extra hour or more…can you seriously not give 4 hours of your life (with commercial breaks!) to the most prestigious award show of the season?
…And if its fatigue from the other shows Skip them for f*cks sake or just watch the highlights – don’t whine at the Oscars just because you don’t know how to pace yourself. Reminds me of my buddy when we used to go to Bonnaroo bitching by Sunday night’s show because he was completely burnt out from the weekend and couldn’t enjoy the closing act.
agree completely
Thanks again and again for continuing to do this. It’s so nice to hear reviews about movies that I would otherwise skip and now may see.
Duran Duran!
