What the Flick?! Podcast 11/16/18

It’s a jam-packed week on the What the Flick?! Podcast, and not just because of the prodigious casts in this week’s new movies. Alonso and I review the excellent heist thriller “Widows,” the so-so Harry Potter prequel “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” and the feel-good drama “Green Book.” We also discuss this year’s Spirit Award nominations and look back at the careers of two legends — Marvel Comics mastermind Stan Lee and Oscar-winning screenwriter William Goldman — who left us this week. We’ve figured out our technical issues, I promise! So thanks for all your feedback, and for sticking around.

    • Not to be overly presumptuous here, because frankly, at this moment you very well could be wearing one. But it needs to be said…that not all heroes wear caps!! Big THANKS, Tom – Super helpful to post those time stamps for the rest of the forums convenience.

  1. Thank you so very much for this podcast. Sound quality is excellent. Bravo! I am so impressed by the insightful reviews and camaraderie. I wish you guys the best at whatever solution you find to get yourselves back in an audio/video format. Pop that top @ 50:00.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

    • You hit the nail on the head with the camraderie comment. Most review shows are just one person doing the talking, which leads to all sorts of systematic blind spots and problems when nobody is holding you to account, questioning what you say. And the ones with more than one person can often devolve into one-upsmanship, a “yes that’s very nice but here’s my far more insightful take”. Here we see something different, more collegial, more sanguine, which comes when you have people secure in themselves discussing matters like sensible adults, who actual listen closely to what their comrades are saying.

  2. Another great podcast – thanks so much for continuing. Always cool to know what to keep an eye out for here in Aus (some indie movies can be released a little late here with little fanfare) 🙂

  3. BTW, the line often attributed to Deep Throat via Bob Woodward “Follow the money” is actually a line that William Goldman wrote in the screenplay for “All the President’s Men.”

Mark Felt never actually said this to Woodward, though he probably expressed a similar sentiment.

  4. Somehow I am JUST finding out you guys are back with a podcast. THANK GOD. Still miss your faces though, any chance of us getting a video version at some point??

In saying that.. I totally disagree about The Crimes of Grindelwald. As a fan of the Potter books/films, I didn’t love the first Fantastic Beasts film, but I did enjoy it. However, I just got back from the new film, and MAN OH MAN I loved it. I understand the complaint about an average movie goer maybe not getting all of the references, but honestly, the Potter fandom is more than large enough for them to get a profit back just from us watching it. I think there would be a bigger problem if we felt like it had been dumbed down for the rest of the world. There were so many questions answered in this film, and some HUGE twists that I could never have seen coming.

  5. Of course Paddington 2 is one of Alonzo’s favorite movies of the year. Makes sense since he and Matt called their team the Paddington 2 for the Anarchy tournament on the movie trivia schmoedown.

I hope you all come back for season 6. Christy too. And you guys should get Ben to do it too. It would so cool to see Ben in the movie trivia schmoedown.

  6. OK so I just finished listening to this, and thoroughly enjoyed every carefully-chosen word of the podcast. Until the last few seconds when Alonso thoughtlessly and churlish advised the listeners to ‘stop harrassing Christy’ about the audio quality. First of all, that’s very easy for you to say because you don’t even listen to it, so you don’t know or care about the issue. Second, because it’s fixed, we’re never going to have to ‘harass’ her again. Third, if we don’t speak up, it will never get fixed. Fourth, everybody was being polite and respectful about it, so there’s really no reason to be a white knight about it. And finally, I couldn’t even listen to the last two episodes because of the low quality. Somebody else said ‘it’s no big deal’ but they’re just trying to be nice, it really is a big deal. It kills the vibe and turns what’s normally a wonderful pre-weekend ritual into an unlistenable slog. But you don’t know or care about any of this because you’re too busy being a critic (a terrific one of course, but that’s beside the point) to give a moment’s thought to what it’s like on the listener’s end. And if you don’t care about the listener’s experience then why the fuck are you even doing the podcast in the first place, just to show how clever and discerning you are? Seriously, the more I write the more pissed off I get, probably because having recovered from a serious case of narcissism myself, it upsets me when I see people I really respect making a blunder of that nature. Ok, rant over, I’m sure we’ll never have to talk about this issue again, thank the maker. And no hard feelings Alonso, I just needed to vent my spleen on this one particular topic, really get my point across, so I hope we’re all good now.

    • May I offer you a bit of advice? I have no expectation that you will follow it, but here it goes.

When you are angry or feel like ranting through email or in the comment section, the best thing to do is to write it all down and then step away for 1/2 day or more. Then, come back to your computer and read what you have written. Perhaps you will find that your comments can be moderated to the point of not being over-the-top or offensive. Then, you have no regrets and almost never have to apologize later. I speak from experience.

I say all of this because you had responded to my comment about the greatly improved sound quality. I completely understand why you may have been a bit frustrated (as was I) with the quality of previous podcasts, but Christy and Co. are doing their best to provide us with a free service. You should not let the seemingly aloof or dismissive comments of one reviewer make you so upset. I’m certain they know their podcasts have at times sounded very amateurish, but they again they are doing their best to cobble this together.

I hope you have a very happy holiday, and please don’t go off on me. Peace.

      • Karen: I too found Chris’s comments a little harsh, but I have to say I reacted similarly to Alonzo’s comment. No one–and I mean no one–in the previous week’s comments harassed anybody, least of all Christy. The comments were all in the vein of constructive criticism. People were just trying to help. This is not only permissible, I would argue that it was desirable for those who care about the podcast. What concerned me most was that the audio quality was so bad that it would turn off a lot of listeners, which could ultimately lead to the demise of the podcast.

Anyway, no one is perfect and we could all most always do a little better. Chris could probably be a little more diplomatic and Alonzo could probably be a little less sensitive to criticism when it is reasonable and offered with good intentions.

Thankfully, the problem seems to have been solved.

  7. Have you guys seen A Private War yet?? I’m really curious what you think about it!

Also. Pleaseeee find a way to get all four of you for the best-of and worst-of and Oscar pods!

  8. Thanks for another great week. Good audio is back! Thanks for that and I look forward to next week. (I can’t wait for The Favorite!)

  9. Great episode as always, i love listening to you every week, even with audio issues i listen fervently 🙂 Just one suggestion to Christy, could you please add the ratings of each movie reviewed in the description of the podcast (I always use the ratings you give to know which movies to go see in theaters)

    Happy Thanksgiving from Paris !

  10. I really missed seeing you all on youtube. You all were the only critics I actually cared to hear opinions and also as a consequence found new arthouse and foreign film suggestions based on your insightful reviews. Is it possible to go back to youtube but under a different name?

  11. Why is it now that you are doing podcasts the comments on your reviews all have to do with the production of the podcasts themselves and not the actual reviews or the movies? Really annoying.

    • First, not “all” of the comments are about “the production of the podcasts themselves”. By my count, of the 26 comments, 7 were about the production values. Second, the audio quality was so bad in the previous episode that I for one feared that the podcast’s audience would eventually stop listening unless it was fixed, which thankfully it seems to have been. This was not a trivial issue.

The podcast is still pretty much in its infancy and some growing pains to be expected.

  12. So glad you guys are doing the podcast! One quick point of order; the flash forward scene in “Crimes of Grindelwald” is a glimpse into what will happen if he *doesn’t* take over the world, not what will happen if he does. (i.e. WWII)

    Keep up the good work!
