“The Nun” is a prequel to “The Conjuring” universe (the “Conjurverse?”), taking us all the way back to rural Romania in 1952 and the war-ravaged abbey where the series’ creepy nun first roamed the halls. Director Corin Hardy’s film is good for a few jump scares here and there, and it’s certainly rich in Gothic horror atmospherics. But it’s more of an empty thrill ride than the sort of disturbing experience the original “Conjuring” films were. My mixed review, at RogerEbert.com
Making a horror movie about a religious figure in the Catholic faith is wrong. Just as you wouldn’t dare to make a horror movie about a Muslim, Hindu, or any other religious person. Is it because our society says the Christians won’t protest or get upset. A Nun in the Catholic faith is a calling to God. If you recall, Audrey Hepburn made a movie about a nun’s life. This movie is in bad taste!!!!
A calling to God? How about we ask your God about the hundreds of children abused by the Catholic Church? While we’re at it, how bout we ask said incompetent deity about the practice of moving child sex offenders in the Church from one parish to the next, free to abuse more children?
If you’re offended by a movie using your religion as fodder for its plot, and not offended by the systematic abuse of children happening all over the country for decades, your priorities need some work.
I don’t care about this movie. I haven’t seen it. But your religion offends me, and basic human decency, more than any movie could ever hope to.
I’m more than a bit confused by the premise and even the reason for this film to exist!
A spin-off based on a villain that was added in reshoots that didn’t add anything to the film except one creepy painting scene.
It’s nothing more than a low budget horror jumpscare fest created solely to cash in on the success of The Conjuring movies without any idea how to be scary except loud noise.
Also Romanians are not Catholics but Orthodox Christians which means that their church is independent from the Vatican, nuns have completely different dress code from what’s presented in the film and in 1952 they were under communist rule which post the question how much influence had the Vatican there? – NUN
