RogerEbert.com — Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer

Norman Movie ReviewHow you feel about Norman the character will determine how you feel about “Norman” the movie. Is he a shameless hustler? Or merely an overbearing yet well-intentioned mensch? And yet, in Richard Gere’s deft, veteran hands, would-be fixer Norman Oppenheimer is consistently, completely fascinating. It’s one of the best performances of Gere’s long and eclectic career. My RogerEbert.com review.

  1. Hi Christy! Not at all interested in seeing this (haven’t we seen this so many times) but wanted to leave you a special note because I have recently discovered you via reading Rogers site and now enjoy your own website also! I am so happy for your many success in your movie reviewing career. Christy you really deserve it! And, you seem like a lovely person. I love the way you express yourself. I also value your specific kind of perception. I was shocked to read you have such a history in L.A though! LA just seems so crazy crazy! I am also really glad to see a woman really shining in the role of reviewer. Critic? Do you call yourselves critics? It’s not a very nice word is it. Why not – appreciator. Like sommelier! Film Sommelier, sniffed swished but not spat out. Anyway, I’ve loved watched a couple of your
video chat reviews and look forward to more. It just takes a bit of time to get through the many pages here. I was pleased to see your discussion on two films very close to my heart – Fruitvale Station and Ex Machina
Nina Hoss is one of my favourite actresses – her internal capacity in Barbara achieved this status for me – and I’d like to recommend We Are The Night starring Hoss, in german with english subtitles. For some reason I fell deeply in love with the film despite it not being my genre. The acting, plus all the assorted elements combining. And Hmm I suppose I don’t need to ensure, you of all people, watch the subtitled version and avoid the dubbed american english version (we laugh at the US prediliction for such, you should write a piece about it. Embrace your subtitles, folks!) Actually the piece you should write is – why are studios so scared of not attracting an audience, they screen 3/4 of the film plot in the trailers, months before opening. They did this with the new Alien film!! As if, Ridley Scott and the words ”new alien film” were not enough!!? It’s crazy. They even showed the actual alien in the trailer. Not a genre I can relate to, but still I found it very patronising and indeed offensive. It makes people want to plug their eyes and ears during the trailers. Sorry for the long note!!
Big hug and kindest regards from Brisbane, Australia.

  2. Oops, sorry I thought this was the entry for Going In Style, I didn’t look closely enough at the man on the left – thought it was Michael Caine! So, thats what I meant by ‘haven’t we seen this story so many times before’ referring to Going In Style

  3. No one else is commeting so I won’t apologise for contributing value
    My favourite actors are
Nina Hoss, Marion Cotillard, Mads Mikkelsen, Juliette Binoche, Mattias Schoenarts, Viggo Mortensen, Sidse Babbett Knudsen, Pilou Asbaek
for me, they elevate the form to a most transcendent level.
