What the Flick?! Podcast 9/13/18

Image result for a simple favor

It’s our third episode of the What the Flick?! Podcast so it’s fitting that three of us are here this time. Maybe all four of us will be able to get it together for episode four …? Alonso, Matt and I talked about as many movies as we could on this jam-packed week, starting with the kinda-sequel, kinda-reboot “The Predator,” Paul Feig’s super-stylish comic noir “A Simple Favor,” the gritty crime story “White Boy Rick,” Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart in the Lizzie Borden drama “Lizzie,” and the psychedelic revenge trip “Mandy,” which features Nicolas Cage at his batshit best. We didn’t drink perfect gin martinis in the middle of the day like Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively do, but we stayed hydrated as you’d expect us to. Thanks to you all for the continuing love and support!

  1. Christy, Matt, Alonso, I love you guys. So happy you are all still working together. I’m battling stage 3 Colon Cancer, and your show has been a weekly staple and helped me through some tough times. Love you guys!

  2. I’m going to see Mandy tonight. Predator tomorrow, and probably white boy rick on Saturday. I will return with my thoughts.
P.S. if you haven’t reviewed The Wife yet, I would LOVE to hear yalls take on it.

  3. Love the review Mandy! I’m somewhere in the middle on it yet my boyfriend has basically the same opinion as you Christy! Would love for y’all to talk about Madeline’s Madeline next week if the rest have played catch up – would an absolute favourite of the year for me.

  4. Thursday is now definitely my favorite day of the week!

As usual, loved this week’s podcast and I look forward to having all four of you back together. I mean John, Paul, and George are great, but without Ringo it is just not the same. . . .

Some technical comments. Although you mentioned that Alonso brought his own microphone, his voice did not come through very well. It sounded distant and with room echo. Christy was loud and clear and Matt was somewhere in between.
It would be nice to provide a link that would allow listeners to download the podcast for later listening. You can do this now by looking at the page source, but this may be too much for many who would like to play an mp3 on their desired platform.
It would also be nice if you could comment on a film’s availability. I would like to see Lizzie, but after some research I see that it is only in limited release, and I’ve found no indication when or even if it will be available nationwide.

Finally, for the next several weeks while this show is still new and your plans for it evolve it would be nice to devote a small segment at the beginning or end of the show updating everyone in this regard. It is really great to hear that you are looking into enhancing and expanding the format, and I cannot adequately express how heartening it is to hear that you like doing it as much as we like listening.

  5. I’m so happy you guys decided to do this ! I kept looking for updates on TYT, had no idea the show was no longer going to be on there. Boo.
Do you have any plans to cover any TV stuff ?
Thanks so much for carrying the torch !

  6. I really look forward to your show and know that you will be missed. It is a nice distraction in this chaotic time. Love to see you guys are working together!

  7. I am so glad you all will be continuing a form of the show. I will watch/listen/read you in any form available. You guys are great.

Just as an FYI, Alonso sounded a little muted. You might want to verify his headphone is compatible with your equipment.

  8. OMG. was wondering where the videos were and finally saw guy did a best of episode and read about the cancellation. WTF + kermode are my go to on youtube. Intelligent discourse unlike all the nonsense on youtube. AHhhhhh. Subscribing!

  9. What can one say about The Predator?
It is as someone have put a Shane Black movie in a blender, mixed with plenty of 80s cheese and added some rotten tomatoes for good measure… I’m not surprised this is bad and I’m confused by the tone of the movie which almost seemed to be more like a parody of a Predator movie. We will be getting The Predators very soon, most probably. I’m also not surprised by the fact that Olivia Munn looked like she didn’t wanted to be there considering the whole controversy she pointed out.

I think that we already had the chance to see fully blown crazy Nic Cage twice already in Vampire’s Kiss and Bad Lieutenant Port Of Call New Orleans and Mandy will be the third chapter of The Cage in its full glory.

  10. Thanks Alonso, Christy, Matt! I miss the “What the Flick” show on YouTube. I’ll look forward to listening and supporting on iTunes. Also, curious why a Red Sox blanket? I grew up in Massachusetts, and have a biological obligation to support the Sox. Why is Christy a fan?

  11. I’m so glad you all are continuing the show ( which works great in a podcast format incidentally ). I’ve been watching the show for years, its been the only consistent part of my Thursday night routine through high school, college and now graduate school . It’s also what I point to as the source for my love of movies. What the flick was where I began to think of them beyond just entertainment , it’s where I learned to discuss them and form my own opinion on them, it’s also the reason I use “gravitas” in my day to day speech (a word that dug it’s way into into my vocabulary). Thanks for keeping it up guys (:
*Apologies for all the cheese in this comment , just pair it with some red wine ,folks *

  12. Im glad we still get your opinions and discussions about movies! I was worried that you got CANCELED canceled…. I just wish we could still see your beautiful faces and dynamics on screen. There is something about watching you 4 talk and interact that is kind of lost without seeing your faces. Is it possible for yall to record these casual, not in a studio movie discussions on youtube? just have your own channel that is more casual since you dont have a studio. You dont even need to heavily edit it. Please please consider it.

  13. Was devastated to hear that What the Flick was being canceled by TYT, it has been my go to movie/TV review place for over five years. I used to watch you and Ignatiy Vishnevetsky on Roger Ebert presents at the movies. I watched Ben Mankiewicz and Ben Lyons on At the Movies. I watched Gene Siskle, Roger Ebert and Richard Roeper for as long as I could remember. I know where I was when I heard both Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert passed passed away.

I am looking forward to more of these podcasts.

  14. Hi Christy,
I really miss the WhatTheFlick videos on youTube! I’ve been looking for them the last two weeks.
I couldn’t believe it got cancelled- wasn’t Matt head of programming- so how did that happen?

Will you have your own youTube channel, or just use WinetheFlick to post a few videos now and then!

I’ve watched WTF on youTube from India the last two years, it was such a great resource for me!!

But above all, just keep up the great work!! I’ll keep listening and watching!
    Thank you.

  15. I am sorry to see the demise of the TYT version of “What the Flick” but happy to see it resurrected here. I have followed WTF for years and, FWIW, I think a substantial contributing factor to the demise of the TYT version is how massively sucky the web site was.

Year after year I saw the site evolve to make it harder and harder to find anything. I checked it out once per week to find out what you had to say about new film releases. That was my main focus. But your review segments kept getting harder and harder to find.

I am okay with the site branching out to cover TV. I am okay with the site branching out to do featurettes where you talk about controversies in the industry or box office results or review trailers. But it was impossible to find even relatively fresh content. It was impossible to find only movie reviews (or TV reviews or . . .). There was no “search” feature where I could check out perhaps an old review of a movie that came out a few years ago.

Instead I got the auto-play of Ben interviewing Tarantino. It was a great interview. But it was not something I wanted to revisit EVERY TIME I VISITED THE SITE for something like two years.

This site is well designed and easy to use (except for the lack of a “search” feature). Good layout is not that hard to pull off. You do it. But if you can’t find content then the content might as well not exist. And, speaking of things that don’t exist. There is no notice on the TYT site that “What the Flick” is no more there.

Since I was slow to find out that WTF has moved I can look forward to listening to the episodes like this one that you have posted but that I haven’t had a chance to listen to yet. And keep the “Wine the Flick” episodes coming. I love them.

    Cheers.

  16. I’m so happy to still be able to listen in on your conversations here. This week you talked me out of The Predator and into The Simple Plan, so i’ll be seeing that, soon. You guys are all my “go-to” opinions, and i’m so glad you’ve continued here. Thank you for still being there.

  17. Hey Christy,

After having not seen any new updates on “What the Flick” for a couple of weeks, I’m just learning that it was cancelled. It’s too bad, as that was the only TYT show I still watched (and really the only film review show), but I’m glad to hear you’re sticking together and will continue to put out reviews in one form or another.

Video reviews would be great (even if just filmed with one of your phones), but audio podcasts are certainly better than nothing. The longer episode length was also nice. Obviously, you covered a lot of reviews, but one of the silver linings I see with the separation from TYT is the loosening of restrictions around filming segments, as you can talk about each film without a third party controlling the segment length or number of uploads.

Anyway, I’m excited see/hear your reviews in the future and, to echo raj from a previous comment, Wine the Flick would be a great name.

    All the Best!

  18. Awesome podcast you 3, please keep it going! Fun and funny to listen to. I can tell if i would like a movie based on what u say about it and knowing your different tastes (usually). Love the numbers!!

  19. This was the only show I was subscribed to on the TYT network. Please keep it alive and get Ben Mankiewicz on board. He was my favourite critic.

  20. Super glad I found you guys again! Shoot, I’m so sorry TYT pulled the show from YouTube. Please keep reviewing and keep releasing podcasts, I love your insights and commentary!

  21. Dear Christy, Matt, Alonzo & Ben, So sorry your top shelf program was pulled! Hopefully it wasn’t because you guys weren’t good team players, or because of those bloody toxic numbers aka ratings. Glad I found you though in this thrift store venue, even though I’m sure Christy’s kitchen is a work of art.

How this for solace? I once read/heard that when Siskel & Ebert’s syndicated show really took off throughout the country, that the NYC market wouldn’t let them in given their pedestrian origins until the numbers aka monies convinced NYC to come down from their high horse.——GLAD YOUR BACK! Terry

    • I think the real root cause of What the Flick?! getting cancelled is that the whole enterprise was a losing proposition, given that the quality of the core programming went down the tube ever since Trump got elected. Cenk just doesn’t know how to think about him or make sense of him, he’s too much of a bullheaded wiseguy Aries to ever seek out new sources of information, new insights, to help get his head around Donald Trump and what he means to the country. If he were to listen to Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast this year he’d be there already. But nope, he’s too busy producing content to stop for a second and give somebody else’s a try. I even uploaded some files for him to listen to, for free, on multiple occasions but nope, he never saw it or never bothered clicking. His loss. So now Young Turks can’t attract enough views or enough membership so they had to cut the budget by axing the only worthwhile content still attached to the company, What the Flick?!. It’s all a bit moronic and silly but in the end you have to be grateful, because they did give us eight and a half years of top-shelf programming. It just sucks to not be able to see the crew anymore, to have to satisfy ourselves with Christy’s sexy voice only and not her ravishing good looks. I probably go a little too far with that comment considering who’s hosting this forum but I’ll leave it because it happens to be true.
