What the Flick?! Podcast 11/9/18

Image result for the grinchChristmas is here whether you’re ready for it or not, and the What the Flick?! Podcast is here for you, too. This week, Alonso, Matt and I review the animated “The Grinch” starring Benedict Cumberbatch, the Nazi zombie thriller “Overlord” and the political drama “The Front Runner.” We also play catch up with one of the best films of the year, Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong’s “Burning,” as well as the two-part, four-hour indie epic “A Bread Factory.” And I fill the boys in on “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” a thoroughly mediocre sequel they were lucky to miss. We are in your ears to guide you in the right direction, so we hope you enjoy.

  1. Christy I hate to have to say this, I really do, but the sound quality is still kind of in the shitter. It’s echoey and there’s way too much resistance between the mic and your pieholes. If you listen to this and then listen to the earlier podcasts I think you will notice a rather wide difference. I have little experience with these matters but moving the mic closer to your face may help. If not… I’ll do some research.

    • Sound not as bad as the previous show, but…
Thanks for the warning about “The Girl…” movie. I was really tempted to see it for Claire Foy in spite of the preview.
I seem to be one of the few in the world who love Jim Carrey’s Grinch!

  2. First, we’re still over the moon that you guys are doing the podcast. Much gratitude from here in flyoverland. But, alas, I’ve got to agree with Chris. The audio quality of the earlier podcasts was lots better than this. Sounds like you’re all in a barrel or something. Alonzo is just barely OK, but you and Matt are muddled sounding much of the time. Can’t always make out what you’re saying. Do any of you know an audio person who can sort it out for you?

  3. Will you review The Romanoffs ? It is such a let down in my opinion – I am very curious to know what you think. Thank you for continuing your reviews as a podcast . The sound problems are part of the growing pains that I am sure you will overcome !

    • have you ever ever ever heard Christy review a TV show? Feature films only seems to be company policy. Otherwise it would just take too much of her time, that’s likely the main issue.

      • But Matt and Alonso could talk shortly about good Tv shows they watch, like this one or Better Call Saul.
I mean, they also review movies only one of them has seen it.

        • Yeah but you have to remember that all these podcasts are recorded at Christy’s dining room table. Do you want her to the other room while the TV segment gets recorded? Might be a little weird. Are people still likely to listen to the entire episode if it starts to venture into niche territory like TV shows? If you want to know what Alonso thinks of certain shows you might check out his Linoleum Knife podcast. On second thought that seems to be over now too. Oh well.

          • Come on man, we only asked if Matt andere Alonso could talk few minutes about a Tv Show, they have seen, like Better Call Saul. For that Christy has not to go to another room.

And they don’t need your defense. If they don’t’ want to do it, they don’t do it. It was only a suggestion from us fans.

  4. Hi, all. Apologies for the technical issues. We’re trying to figure it out. We thought we had it all right this time. Matt ran it through Audacity to try and take out the background echo, and it sounded good to us before we posted it. I’ll tinker with it over the weekend. I’m frustrated by this too, trust me. Thanks for sticking with us.

    • no problem this is a very minor issue in the grand scheme of things. We’re now approaching what, the ninth year of What the Flick?! so the amount of goodwill you guys have banked from the years upon years of faithful service is like Fort Knox, there’s more gold in there than anyone knows what to do with, a little technical gremlin is not going to derail the steam train, no one is jumping ship I would imagine. Oooh did I just mix three different metaphors in one sentence, don’t do that every day.

  5. Any chance you guys can buy some decent microphones? $20 x 3 mics from Amazon will fix this problem. Oh, and thank you for continuing! You’re still the best review crew.

  6. The audio issue was noticeable but didn’t sink the show like last time. I have a podcast and I know things happen. Don’t let people give you too hard a time. A little static doesn’t deter my love of What The Flick in any form 🙂

  7. Hey Christy,
I’m so grateful that you and the gang are still offering your collective insights, wit, and humanistic wisdom in this beleaguered world. With the loss of FilmStruck your guidance is needed more then ever. In addition, your Documentary recommendations have been indispensable. Shine on !

  8. Sound quality is no biggie, just glad you guys are still around reviewing movies every week ! The Bread Winner and Burning sound awesome, can’t wait until they come around Nashville

  9. 0:00 – 12:24 : The Grinch
    12:25 – 25:14 : The Front Runner
    25:15 – 34:37 : Overlord
    34:38 – 42:22 : Burning
    42:23 – 50:44 : Bread Factory
    50:45 – 57:00 : The Girl in the Spider’s Web

  10. Wow I am so relieved to have found you guys again!! Every time I see a movie the first thing I used to do was look up your reviews. SO happy you’re continuing the show. I was lost without you :,)

  11. I watched The Girl in the Spiders Web last week and spent the entire film full of anger. Besides the fact that its just not a good movie in basically any way, if you’re a fan of the first three novels, just avoid this at all costs. They completely disregard Lisbet’s ENTIRE backstory and basically create a new one. Absolute waste of money, just terrible.

  12. Thoroughly enjoyed The (new, improved) Grinch. Grew up watching the cartoon version, and while it’s still a tear-jerker, the 2018 version is awash with vibrant color, dynamic technology and more nostalgic Christmas songs. Absolutely stunning. It’s message of Love and Kindness is more important now than ever. Thanks for the review. Might have bypassed is you hadn’t recommended.
