Straight Outta Compton

Universal Pictures Rated R for language throughout, strong sexuality/nudity, violence and drug use. Running time: 147 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four. For a movie about a groundbreaking, risk-taking group like N.W.A., “Straight Outta Compton” is surprisingly conventional in its adherence to music biopic tropes. The rise-fall-rise-again structure, the groupies and the […]

RogerEbert.com — The Theory of Everything

“The Theory of Everything” is biopic about one of the most brilliant people in the history of the planet, the renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking. He’s a man famous for thinking in boldly innovative ways, yet his story is told in the safest and most conventional method imaginable. Director James Marsh — an Oscar winner for […]

What the Flick?! — The Theory of Everything

So good to be back with my friends talking movies after a couple of weeks away. One of the biggies during this busy week is the Stephen Hawking biopic “The Theory of Everything,” which features strong performances but overall is frustratingly conventional.

Get on Up

Universal Pictures Rated PG-13 for sexual content, drug use, some strong language and violent situations. Running time: 138 minutes. Three stars out of four. Anyone who knows me well knows of my deep love for the criminally underrated “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.” We quote lines and sing songs from it around the house […]

What the Flick?! — Get on Up

Matt, Alonso and I were all shocked at how good “Get on Up” is and how it breathes life into the musical biopic, a genre that’s typically riddled with cliches. (See: “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.” No really, you should see it.) Chadwick Boseman is completely captivating as James Brown and the film as […]

What the Flick?! — Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent was an innovator in the world of haute couture. This biopic about him is pretty by-the-numbers. Alonso and I got all gussied up to review.

RogerEbert.com — Yves Saint Laurent

The first of two biopics this year about the influential French fashion designer, “Yves Saint Laurent” is visually lush but emotionally shallow. Pierre Niney bears a striking resemblance to the late haute couture powerhouse with his lanky frame and those signature spectacle. But we never get a strong sense of what drove him. My review, […]

Jobs

Open Road Films Rated PG-13 for some drug content and brief strong language. Running time: 127 minutes. One and a half stars out of four. The irony in “Jobs,” about the late Apple Computers co-founder Steve Jobs, is not how a man could be so beloved and yet be such a bastard. The irony is […]

What the Flick?! — Jobs

Ashton Kutcher wasn’t quite up to the job, if you will, in portraying the influential co-founder of Apple Computers.
