Breakfast All Day Podcast — 2019 Oscar Nominations

It’s Hollywood’s biggest morning, if you’re into that kind of thing. Alonso and I break down all of the Academy Award nominations, both the ones we’re excited about and the ones we would’ve liked to have seen. “The Favourite” and “Roma” led all nominees with 10 apiece, which we were delighted to see, but then there were many egregious oversights including “Burning” in the foreign language category and Ethan Hawke in the best actor category for “First Reformed.” We also very briefly dip our toe into the muck of the Razzie Award nominations. Listen and enjoy, and let us know what you’re happy about and what you wish had been included.

  1. I cannot believe Adam McKay got a director nomination over more worthy nominees (Debra Granik, Barry Jenkins, Marielle Heller, just to name a few) among other egregious choices in the Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Documentary categories. The nominations this year get more wrong than right.

  2. The Buster Skruggs adaptation nomination is a little troublesome. Two of the stories of the six were inspired by short works from other authors. That slot should’ve gone to Sisters Brothers or Annihilation. I had a feeling either Cold War or Shoplifters would get director nomination, and since Roma will likely win best picture they will honor Koreeda with best foreign language win over Cold War.

  3. I was really bummed “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” got snubbed. And I wish critics and audiences had gone to see Rosamund Pike and “A Private War.” Thrilled for Marina de Tavira and Yalitza Aparicio though!

  4. Really disappointed that “Leave No Trace” got no recognition, especially Debra Granik. I have to catch up on the rest, but was one of my favorite movies of 2018.
I really don’t like when the Academy gives out awards for more of a lifetime of achievement than for the actual performance when stacked against others in a category. That being said, I would love to see Sam Elliot get one this year.
